Special Guest Ulrike Schmidt

Ulrike is one of Amnesty’s country co-ordinators, holding the
responsibility for Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland
and Romania. She spoke to us on Amnesty’s work surrounding the rights of
Roma people in Europe. Anyone who missed it can find more information on
this topic on the Amnesty UK website.

Treasurer’s report

Thanks to JGi for this update

Not much change. Cheque to RB for £5.80 for postage, £63.00 to the
Methodist Church for the hire of the hall.

We now have £494.91.

Secretary’s report

I Welcome Success

On 16 March, the Refugee Family Reunion Bill had its second reading
in the House of Commons – and passed to the next stage! This takes us
one giant step closer to reuniting refugee families. We needed at least
100 MPs to vote in order for the Bill to pass the second reading. We’re
delighted that 129 MPs supported bringing refugee families together —
thank you to all of you for your phone calls, letters, emails, events
and MP visits up and down the UK.

Toxic Twitter

Amnesty is campaigning against online violence against women and is
encouraging individuals to write to the CEO twitter. You can take part
in this action here on the Amnesty

AGM Update

MDS and CC represented the group at the Amnesty International UK AGM in
Swansea. All motions were passed in line with the group’s voting
preferances with the exception of A2 — please see last month’s
minutes for details on the resolutions.

Data Protection Legislation – GDPR

The group discussed the impact of the new data protection legislation on
the group mailing this and we are planning steps to make sure we meet
the new regulations before they come into force.

The events committee are happy to receive any new members. We meet
sporadically dependent on need. Please get in touch if you would be

Mayday Rally Stall

Sunday 6th May, Glasgow Concert Hall

We will be holding a stall at this event and promoting the campaign for Esmail Abdi.

Meeting with Ziya

9th of May, location TBC

Ziya is an Amnesty supporter who is cycling from Land’s end to John O’Groats to raise funds for AI and awareness around the human rights situation in Turkey. He will be in Glasgow on the 9th of May and members of the group are going to meet Ziya for dinner. Please let us know if you would like to come along.

STUC conference on LGBTI rights in the workplace
